Qualcomm’s Auto Surge Couldn’t Outrun a 20% Handset Drop
Automotive revenue jumped 61%, but handset revenue fell 20% and pulled total sales and earnings lower. At $176.88, the stock already discounts a meaningful diversification recovery.

Investment thesis
Why is this mispriced?
- 01
1. The market is weighing a structurally valuable licensing franchise and rapid automotive growth against continued dependence on premium handsets.
- 02
2. Automotive revenue grew 61.0% and IoT grew 9.0%, but those businesses were not yet large enough to offset a 20.0% handset decline.
- 03
3. Input-cost inflation and higher operating expenses are compressing profitability before Qualcomm’s pricing actions have fully taken effect.
- 04
4. Management expects non-handset growth to accelerate sharply in FY2027, but the current 20.2x TTM earnings multiple already assigns material value to that execution.
- 05
5. Reported TTM EPS includes volatile tax and investment items, making the apparent earnings multiple less dependable than the headline figure suggests.
Business
Overview
QUALCOMM INC/DE (QCOM), commonly known as Qualcomm, develops wireless, computing and connectivity platforms and licenses a large cellular patent portfolio. QCT generates semiconductor and related product revenue across handsets, automotive and IoT, while QTL earns licensing revenue from Qualcomm’s intellectual property. Q3 FY2026 revenue was $9.95 billion, with QCT contributing $8.50 billion and QTL $1.28 billion, according to Qualcomm Q3 FY2026 earnings release. The business remains exposed to premium handsets, a concentrated customer base, China and third-party semiconductor suppliers, even as management expands into vehicles, edge computing and data centers. Under the supplied methodology, gross margin, free cash flow, ROIC and net debt are not meaningful valuation fields; this update instead emphasizes revenue, pre-tax income, EPS, book capital and the balance sheet. Snapshot values of zero for EV/EBITDA, FCF yield and ROIC therefore mean not meaningful or not disclosed, not an economic value of zero.

What changed this quarter
Qualcomm’s fiscal third quarter was weaker in aggregate despite a much stronger revenue mix outside handsets. Revenue declined 4.0% year over year to $9.95 billion from $10.37 billion. GAAP net income fell 25.0% to $2.00 billion, and diluted EPS declined 23.0% to $1.87 from $2.43. The release reported earnings before taxes of $2.46 billion, down 17.0%, while operating income fell to $1.63 billion from $2.76 billion. These figures point to a larger deterioration in profitability than the modest top-line decline alone suggests, according to the Qualcomm Q3 FY2026 earnings release.
The principal change was within QCT. Handset revenue declined 20.0% to $5.09 billion, a reduction of $1.24 billion from the prior-year quarter. Automotive revenue rose 61.0% to $1.59 billion, while IoT increased 9.0% to $1.83 billion. Automotive and IoT together added approximately $753 million year over year, but that was insufficient to absorb the handset decline. Total QCT revenue consequently fell 5.0% to $8.50 billion, and QCT EBT fell 18.0% to $2.19 billion.
QTL was more resilient but did not provide an offset. Licensing revenue declined 3.0% to $1.28 billion, while segment EBT fell 6.0% to $881 million. QTL’s EBT margin remained exceptional at 69.0%, down from 71.0%, whereas QCT’s EBT margin contracted four percentage points to 26.0%. Qualcomm therefore entered the quarter with two pressures operating simultaneously: declining handset volume and profitability pressure across both major segments.
The supplied quarterly series records the operating-margin field, designated as a pre-tax measure for this analysis, at 16.3% versus 26.6% one year earlier. The release separately reports consolidated EBT of $2.46 billion and rounds GAAP EBT margin to 25.0% in its reconciliation. Because those supplied measures are not directly consistent, the valuation work relies on the filed dollar amounts and reported EPS rather than attempting to reconcile or silently recalculate the series. Quarterly free cash flow and gross margin are likewise treated as not meaningful under the supplied methodology.
Why it matters for the thesis
The quarter strengthens the diversification argument but weakens the near-term earnings case. Automotive has now produced 23 consecutive quarters of double-digit year-over-year growth, and its 61.0% increase made it a substantially larger contributor to QCT. Combined automotive and IoT revenue reached $3.42 billion, representing roughly 40% of QCT revenue. That is material progress toward reducing handset dependence, but the quarter also demonstrated that handsets still determine the direction of consolidated results.
Management attributed part of the pressure to a challenging memory and supply environment. The company said semiconductor input costs were rising across wafer fabrication, assembly, test, advanced packaging, memory and other materials. Qualcomm is responding through product-pricing changes, but those changes are expected to benefit gross margins gradually rather than immediately. Q4 guidance incorporates those pressures and calls for revenue of $9.7 billion to $10.5 billion and GAAP EPS of $1.22 to $1.42, according to the Qualcomm Q3 FY2026 earnings release.
Cash generation also softened on a year-to-date basis. Net cash from operations was $8.41 billion for the first nine months of FY2026, down from $10.02 billion in the comparable period. Inventory increased by $1.80 billion, while capital expenditures rose to $1.58 billion from $785 million. Qualcomm nevertheless returned $2.3 billion to shareholders during the quarter through $973 million of dividends and $1.4 billion of repurchases. The Qualcomm Q3 FY2026 Form 10-Q shows cash of $4.53 billion, marketable securities of $3.77 billion and long-term debt of $12.78 billion at quarter-end.
The longer-term thesis now rests more heavily on management’s non-handset targets. Management expects non-handset revenue growth, including data center, to accelerate from 24.0% in FY2026 to more than 60.0% in FY2027 and targets $40 billion of total non-handset revenue by FY2029. Those objectives could alter Qualcomm’s growth profile, but Q3 provides evidence of automotive execution rather than proof that the entire target is achievable. The present valuation should not capitalize the target fully before data-center revenue, customer breadth and associated profitability become visible in reported results.
What QUALCOMM INC/DE is worth after the print
With no prior SageNoodle coverage, this update establishes rather than revises fair value. We use the supplied TTM EPS of $8.75 and an explicit earnings-multiple framework. This is imperfect because FY2026 reported earnings include volatile investment income and tax effects: Q3 investment and other income was $1.01 billion, and nine-month net income included a $4.14 billion income-tax benefit. No normalized EPS figure was provided, so the scenarios use reported TTM EPS without an undisclosed adjustment.
The bear case applies 14.0x TTM EPS, producing $122.50 per share. It assumes handset weakness persists, pricing actions fail to recover higher input costs promptly and non-handset growth falls short of management’s targets. A lower multiple also reflects customer concentration, semiconductor cyclicality and the risk that reported EPS overstates recurring earning power.
The base case applies 20.0x TTM EPS for fair value of $175 per share. That assumes automotive and IoT continue expanding, handset revenue stabilizes rather than quickly returning to growth, and pricing gradually mitigates cost pressure. It gives Qualcomm credit for QTL’s economics and improving diversification without assigning a premium multiple to data-center opportunities that have not yet been quantified in the supplied financial statements.
The bull case applies 26.0x TTM EPS, producing $227.50 per share. It requires rapid non-handset growth, successful data-center commercialization and restored QCT profitability. At the current price of $176.88, the shares trade almost exactly at base-case fair value and at the supplied 20.2x TTM P/E. The resulting verdict is Fairly Valued: upside to $175 is negative 1.1%, well inside the 15% valuation threshold. The quarter does not justify a higher base multiple because automotive strength was offset by deteriorating consolidated revenue, EPS and profitability.
What could prove this wrong
The bearish interpretation could be too severe if the handset decline is temporary and pricing actions restore profitability faster than management’s gradual language implies. A recovery in premium-tier handset demand, combined with sustained automotive growth, could generate operating leverage that is not evident in Q3. The base case also assigns limited value to data centers; large, recurring deployments could support the bull-case multiple.
The more important downside risk is that diversification remains too small or too expensive to offset the core business. Research and development expense increased to $2.61 billion from $2.23 billion, while selling, general and administrative expense rose to $976 million from $771 million. If automotive, IoT and data-center expansion require prolonged spending without comparable incremental profit, revenue diversification would not necessarily translate into higher per-share value.
The balance sheet and capital-allocation pattern also merit attention. Inventory reached $8.38 billion, up from $6.53 billion at the end of FY2025, while cash declined to $4.53 billion. Repurchases can support per-share results, but nine-month buybacks of $6.81 billion exceeded operating cash generation after dividends and rising investment requirements. Continued buybacks alongside elevated inventories, acquisitions and input-cost pressure could reduce financial flexibility.
Finally, Qualcomm’s own risk disclosures emphasize dependence on a small number of customers and licensees, vertical integration by customers, China exposure, limited third-party suppliers and challenges to the licensing model. Evidence that a major handset customer is internalizing more silicon, or that licensing economics are deteriorating, would undermine both the earnings base and the multiple used here. Conversely, sustained non-handset growth above 60.0% in FY2027 with stable segment margins would invalidate the cautious base case.

Both sides
Bull vs bear
Bull case
- Automotive revenue grew 61.0% and has now posted 23 consecutive quarters of double-digit year-over-year growth.
- Automotive and IoT together reached $3.42 billion, making non-handset QCT revenue increasingly material.
- QTL retained a 69.0% EBT margin despite lower revenue, demonstrating the licensing franchise’s economic strength.
- Management expects non-handset growth to accelerate to more than 60.0% in FY2027, including data center.
- Qualcomm continued substantial dividends and repurchases, returning $2.3 billion during the quarter.
Bear case
- Handset revenue fell 20.0%, overwhelming growth in automotive and IoT and driving a 5.0% QCT revenue decline.
- GAAP EPS declined 23.0%, and QCT EBT margin contracted by four percentage points.
- Broad semiconductor input-cost inflation is affecting current performance and Q4 guidance before pricing changes take effect.
- Nine-month operating cash flow declined while inventory and capital expenditures increased.
- The supplied 20.2x TTM P/E relies on earnings affected by material tax benefits and investment income.
What could break
Risk matrix
| Risk | Severity | Probability | Rationale |
|---|---|---|---|
| Handset and customer concentration | High | High | A 20.0% handset revenue decline was sufficient to outweigh rapid automotive growth, illustrating continued dependence on the core market and major customers. |
| Input-cost and margin pressure | High | High | Management reported broad increases in fabrication, packaging, memory and other input costs, with pricing benefits expected only gradually. |
| Non-handset execution | High | Medium | The valuation requires continued automotive and IoT growth, while management’s FY2027 and FY2029 targets extend beyond demonstrated quarterly results. |
| Earnings-quality volatility | Medium | High | Investment income and substantial tax benefits make reported TTM EPS a less stable measure of recurring operating performance. |
| Balance-sheet and capital allocation | Medium | Medium | Cash declined, inventory increased and Qualcomm continued large repurchases while funding acquisitions and higher capital expenditures. |
Timeline
Catalysts
- Q4 FY2026Bullish
Pricing actions begin affecting margins
Evidence that product-price changes are offsetting higher semiconductor and memory input costs would support the base case.
- Q4 FY2026 resultsNeutral
Revenue and EPS against company guidance
Qualcomm guided to $9.7-$10.5 billion of revenue and $1.22-$1.42 of GAAP diluted EPS.
- FY2027Bullish
Non-handset growth inflection
Management expects non-handset revenue growth, including data center, to exceed 60.0%.
- FY2027Bullish
Handset revenue stabilization
A smaller handset decline would allow automotive and IoT growth to influence consolidated revenue more directly.
