Why is this mispriced?
- 01
1. Micron's earnings power has reset: Q3 FY2026 revenue reached $41.46 billion and GAAP operating margin reached 80.4%, compared with $9.30 billion and 23.3% one year earlier.
- 02
2. The improvement was broad rather than confined to one business unit, with reported gross margins ranging from 79% to 87% across all four units.
- 03
3. The $50.0 billion Q4 revenue guide and approximately 86% gross-margin outlook indicate that Q3 was not yet the near-term peak, while strategic customer agreements may improve visibility.
- 04
4. The market already capitalizes substantial durability: at $977.41, the stock sits above the $900 base-case fair value and requires earnings to remain far above Micron's historical cycle averages.
- 05
5. The central mispricing question is no longer whether AI memory demand is strong, but how much of the current margin structure survives capacity additions, competition and eventual normalization.
Business
Overview
Micron Technology, Inc. (MU) designs and manufactures DRAM, NAND, NOR and related memory and storage products used in data centers, mobile and client devices, automobiles, embedded systems and other compute-intensive applications. It reports through Cloud Memory, Core Data Center, Mobile and Client, and Automotive and Embedded business units; Q3 FY2026 unit revenue was $13.77 billion, $11.52 billion, $11.52 billion and $4.63 billion, respectively. Micron makes money by selling memory and storage products whose revenue and margins depend on demand, product mix, technology transitions and industry supply. The supplied documents do not disclose a geographic revenue split or individual customer concentration, although the company identifies a lead HBM4 customer and refers to multi-year strategic customer agreements. The latest quarter demonstrates unusually strong AI-era economics, but Micron's historical financial record still shows pronounced cyclicality, including negative margins and free cash flow in the prior downturn. What changed this quarter
Micron's financial profile changed more in Q3 FY2026 than a normal sequential comparison suggests. Revenue rose to $41.46 billion from $23.86 billion in Q2 and $9.30 billion one year earlier. That represents sequential growth of 73.7% and year-over-year growth of 345.7%. GAAP gross profit increased to $35.06 billion, producing an 84.6% gross margin versus 74.4% in Q2 and 37.7% in Q3 FY2025. GAAP operating margin climbed to 80.4% from 67.6% sequentially and 23.3% year over year. Micron Q3 FY2026 earnings release
The operating leverage was unusually strong because expenses did not rise with revenue. GAAP operating expenses increased to $1.74 billion from $1.62 billion sequentially, while revenue expanded by $17.60 billion. Operating income therefore more than doubled to $33.32 billion. GAAP diluted EPS reached $24.67, compared with $12.07 in Q2 and $1.68 in the year-ago quarter. Net income was $28.24 billion.
Cash conversion also improved. Operating cash flow was $25.39 billion, up from $11.90 billion in Q2 and $4.61 billion one year earlier. Subtracting $7.83 billion of property, plant and equipment expenditures produces $17.56 billion of GAAP-based free cash flow. Micron separately reported $18.30 billion of adjusted free cash flow after including proceeds from government incentives and property sales. Cash and equivalents ended the quarter at $25.00 billion, while current and long-term debt totaled $5.72 billion. The balance sheet therefore moved to a substantial net-cash position during the quarter. Micron Q3 FY2026 Form 10-Q
The improvement was broad across the portfolio. Cloud Memory produced an 83% gross margin, Core Data Center 87%, Mobile and Client 87%, and Automotive and Embedded 79%. Every unit's operating margin was at least 75%. Core Data Center revenue more than doubled sequentially to $11.52 billion, while Cloud Memory revenue rose to $13.77 billion. This breadth matters because it reduces the possibility that the consolidated result was produced by a single narrow product category.
The near-term outlook strengthened again. Management guided Q4 FY2026 revenue to $50.0 billion, plus or minus $1.0 billion, GAAP gross margin to approximately 86%, and GAAP diluted EPS to $30.73, plus or minus $1.00. The release did not provide an explicit Q4 operating-margin forecast or free-cash-flow forecast. It did say HBM4 was in high-volume shipments for a lead customer's platform, with samples shipped to multiple additional end customers.
Why it matters for the thesis
The quarter strengthens the argument that high-performance memory has become more strategically valuable in AI infrastructure. Micron's economics are not merely recovering from the FY2023 downturn: Q3 margins moved far beyond the company's supplied historical record. The Q4 guide suggests that pricing, mix and demand remained favorable after the quarter ended rather than reversing immediately.
Management also introduced a potential durability mechanism. Chief Executive Sanjay Mehrotra said multi-year strategic customer agreements should “significantly enhance the durability and predictability” of financial performance. The release does not disclose agreement volumes, prices, counterparties or contract protections, so the economic value cannot yet be quantified. Still, longer commitments could reduce some of the spot-market volatility traditionally associated with memory.
Product execution supports the demand side of the thesis. HBM4 entered high-volume shipments for the lead customer's platform, HBM4E development remained on track for expected calendar 2027 volume production, and Micron reported progress in server modules, data-center SSDs, mobile memory and automotive products. These developments indicate that the revenue acceleration is accompanied by product ramps across several end markets, not solely higher reported pricing.
The caveat is that this quarter changes earnings power more clearly than it changes the industry's cyclicality. Micron's supplied annual history includes gross margins ranging from negative 9.1% to 58.9% before the current fiscal year, while annual operating margins ranged from negative 37.0% to 49.3%. Q3's 84.6% gross margin and 80.4% operating margin are therefore exceptional. Treating them as permanent would ignore the same supply, pricing and capital-intensity forces that produced earlier downturns.
That distinction is important at $977.41 per share. The supplied trailing P/E is 22.1 times based on trailing EPS of $44.18, while the trailing free-cash-flow yield is only 2.3%. Q4 guidance implies another sharp increase in trailing earnings, but a valuation built on one quarter's annualized earnings would be especially sensitive to any future margin normalization. The quarter makes the fundamental thesis stronger; the current price makes the valuation case less forgiving.
What MICRON TECHNOLOGY INC is worth after the print
There is no prior SageNoodle fair value to carry forward, so this earnings update establishes an initial scenario range. The valuation uses assumed normalized EPS multiplied by an assumed earnings multiple. These are explicit analytical assumptions, not company guidance or consensus estimates. Normalized EPS is set below the Q4 guided annualized run rate because Micron's supplied history demonstrates substantial cyclicality and because current margins stand well above prior peaks.
The bear case is $420 per share, based on $35 of normalized EPS and a 12 times multiple. It assumes current margins compress sharply as supply responds, leaving normalized earnings below the present $44.18 trailing figure. The base case is $900 per share, based on $60 of normalized EPS and a 15 times multiple. This assumes AI-related demand and customer agreements preserve a meaningful structural improvement, but that margins retreat from the Q3 and guided Q4 levels. The bull case is $1,275 per share, based on $85 of normalized EPS and a 15 times multiple, reflecting sustained high-value memory demand and successful HBM4 and HBM4E execution.
The $900 base-case fair value is 7.9% below the current $977.41 price, placing the shares within the fairly valued band under SageNoodle's methodology. The asymmetry is not especially favorable: the bear case implies severe downside, while reaching the bull case requires normalized EPS almost twice the current trailing level. The quarter justifies high normalized earnings assumptions, but not the presumption that an 80.4% operating margin is a durable baseline.
Enterprise-value-to-EBITDA is not disclosed in the supplied data and is therefore not used. The valuation also does not assign separate value to strategic customer agreements because their commercial terms were not provided. Evidence that contracted volumes and pricing protect returns through a supply cycle could support a higher multiple or normalized EPS assumption in later updates.
What could prove this wrong
The principal downside risk is margin mean reversion. Current profitability may encourage Micron and its competitors to add capacity, while customers may eventually moderate purchases or redesign systems to use memory more efficiently. A decline from the guided 86% gross margin would not itself invalidate the thesis, but a rapid return toward Micron's historical range would make the $60 base-case normalized EPS assumption too high.
Customer and platform concentration are another concern. The release identifies high-volume HBM4 shipments for a lead customer's platform but does not disclose that customer's share of revenue or the contractual protections attached to the relationship. Delays, qualification failures, platform changes or customer inventory corrections could have an outsized effect when expectations are elevated.
Capital intensity remains material even during extraordinary profitability. Property, plant and equipment expenditures were $7.83 billion in Q3 and $19.60 billion for the first nine months. Free cash flow is currently more than sufficient to fund investment, but that relationship could reverse if capital spending remains high while pricing and margins fall. The FY2023 experience, when annual free cash flow was negative $6.12 billion in the supplied table, shows that cash generation can deteriorate quickly.
Execution must also keep pace with the roadmap. HBM4E volume production is expected in calendar 2027, while several 1-gamma, server, mobile and automotive products remain in qualification, sampling or ramp stages. Competitive products arriving sooner, manufacturing yield issues or customer qualification setbacks would weaken both growth and the case for a structural valuation premium.
Finally, the valuation itself can prove the constructive operating thesis financially unrewarding. At $977.41, the market price already exceeds the $900 base case. Even strong Q4 delivery may not create upside if it is followed by evidence that margins are peaking. The clearest evidence against this cautious conclusion would be multi-year contracted demand, sustained free cash flow after record capital investment, and margins remaining structurally above prior-cycle levels.

Both sides
Bull vs bear
Bull case
- Q4 guidance calls for $50.0 billion of revenue and an approximately 86% GAAP gross margin, indicating further near-term expansion.
- All four business units reported gross margins of at least 79%, demonstrating broad profitability rather than dependence on one unit.
- Q3 generated $17.56 billion of GAAP-based free cash flow despite $7.83 billion of property, plant and equipment spending.
- HBM4 is in high-volume shipments, while HBM4E volume production is expected in calendar 2027.
- Cash and equivalents reached $25.00 billion while total debt fell to $5.72 billion.
Bear case
- Q3's 84.6% gross margin and 80.4% operating margin stand far above Micron's supplied historical ranges and may invite capacity additions.
- The $977.41 share price exceeds the $900 base-case fair value, limiting the margin of safety.
- Customer concentration and the commercial terms of strategic agreements were not disclosed.
- Capital expenditures reached $19.60 billion for the first nine months and could pressure free cash flow in a downturn.
- Memory remains cyclical, with Micron reporting negative gross margin and negative free cash flow as recently as FY2023.
What could break
Risk matrix
| Risk | Severity | Probability | Rationale |
|---|---|---|---|
| Margin normalization | High | High | Current gross and operating margins are unprecedented in the supplied history and could decline as supply expands or product mix changes. |
| Customer and platform concentration | High | Medium | HBM4 is shipping in volume for a lead customer platform, but customer concentration and agreement terms were not disclosed. |
| Capital intensity | High | Medium | First-nine-month property, plant and equipment spending was $19.60 billion, leaving cash generation exposed to a future revenue or pricing downturn. |
| Product-roadmap execution | High | Medium | The thesis depends partly on successful HBM4 scaling, HBM4E development and qualification of multiple next-generation products. |
| Valuation compression | High | Medium | The market price is above base-case fair value, so even strong results could be offset by a lower multiple if growth expectations moderate. |
