FirstNet Authority Funds 220 New Cell Sites to Broaden AT&T-Run Public Safety Network
The FirstNet Authority Board approved capital outlays to construct 220 purpose-built cell sites deployed by AT&T in rural and remote corridors. This coverage expansion builds on previous investments in purpose-built sites , with more than 350 FirstNet sites now in development. Of that amount, the Board approved nearly $1.1 billion to fund network enhancements in the coming fiscal year.
Why this matters
FirstNet remains a cornerstone of AT&T's enterprise stability. These government-directed site investments enable AT&T to extend physical wireless infrastructure into sparsely populated areas where standalone commercial capital returns would otherwise be dilutive. Because AT&T deploys the infrastructure under public safety auspices, it expands network reach and reinforces public sector client retention while utilizing dedicated public authority funds.
