Caterpillar scales driverless hauling into mid-sized quarries with Luck Stone expansion
Caterpillar and Luck Stone agreed to expand autonomous hauling across two additional Virginia sites at Boscobel and Bealeton. The deal follows an 18-month pilot at the Bull Run Quarry, where autonomous haul trucks moved more than 3.5 million tons of material since November 2024. The rollout outfits two fleets of Cat 775 trucks, supported by regional dealer Carter Machinery, marking Caterpillar's first commercial autonomous deployment on this mid-sized platform alongside complementary equipment technology.

Autonomy in heavy earthmoving has long been confined to ultra-class trucks operating in mega-scale open-pit mines. Adapting proprietary systems like MineStar Command down to mid-tier vehicles such as the Cat 775 shifts the technology from a specialized mining niche into the high-volume aggregates and quarrying market. This migration expands Caterpillar's addressable equipment base, creating recurring, higher-margin software and technology site integrations while embedding dealership partners like Carter Machinery into ongoing digital maintenance workflows.
